Today, I received the girls' Christmas dresses I ordered on Etsy. They are adorable! With some good afternoon light from my bedroom window, I thought I'd just throw the dresses on and attempt a card picture. Knowing my children, I had low expectations for this shoot, done all by myself, too close to dinner time. Though the bribe of my coveted Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia ice cream did hold Emery down for a few pictures, it didn't seem to do much for Eve:
Most of my pictures ended up looking like this:
or this:
Then there was this one with the long faces:
The one of her laughing at my desperation:
And, of course, the obligatory screaming baby photo:
Then the child who knows how to walk got up to chase the cat and terrorize the dogs, so the child who was held captive by pilsbury legs allowed me this sweet glance:
And that, apparently, is as good as it gets for Christmas cards this year.
How is it, my resourceful friends, that you get your little ones to take holiday pictures? I'm afraid I'm in dire need of your secrets.

I'm guessing you got a great shot of the girls, but thanks for sharing the outtakes too. :) Hmmmm...no wonder I am procrastinating on trying to get a picture!
LOVE the dresses! So glad they finally made it and that everything fits.
These are fantastic. Personally I think the "imperfect" pictures are the best ones.
So cute! I love the dresses too. Em looks a lot like you these days. I can't wait to see them on Friday!!!
That first picture, Eve's boo-boo face, I can't stand it, I want to squish her cheeks.
The dresses are adorable and I agree with LJ -- I like the "imperfect", unposed candids the best.
I have been trying unsuccessfully for a good month to get a picture of mine, argh, the frustration.
Absolutely adorable!! Etsy has the best stuff!! I just always wait to long to order : (
We have not yet done our holiday portrait this year...hopefully this weekend. Luckily, I have a friend who does them so she has the magic power of combining several shots to make one perfect picture!! But, things might be different this year with 2 two-year-olds ;)
Love the new blog!!!
We got a friend to help with the family shot, but we used a candid one for the kids together. Getting one of the kids together was impossible!!
Oh, the outtakes are adorable :)
I can totally relate - we took family portraits last night, too, at dinnertime. Seriously...what was I thinking? It was almost a joke trying to get 3 wiggly boys to sit "still" and follow directions, and have everyone looking the right way AND smiling! There were a couple of Kodak moments, and we ended up choosing the photos that were a "true version" of our life - you know, the one where one is laughing, the other is poking him, and we're just trying to keep the baby from screaming too hard. Ah, yes...the truth about life with many small children, documented forever ;)
LOVE the girls' dresses!
Oh my goodness, SOOOO cute :)
I love the dresses and the outtakes!
Ha! My children at 6 and 2, and over the last two years, I managed to capture 4 pictures where both of them look normal. Only in one of the four pictures do both of them actually look at the camera. (there is one other one that I adore, but the little one has cake all over his face). You have those fantastic professional photos from a couple of moths ago--can you use one of them for a holiday card?
You have the same problem I do -- we have so many outtakes and getting a picture of the two boys together dressed in their little outfits is impossible since my 2 year old decided that if anything is important to me he absolutely will not cooperate with it. If you find an answer to how to get them to take good pics, please let me know!
